III. The Land Office Muster Rolls

Although the descriptive lists of Fannin's men, and the original muster rolls of the companies of his command were destroyed at San Felipe in April, 1836, Fannin on February 29, 1836, returned muster rolls of nearly all of the companies of his command, which were forwarded directly to the Convention at Washington on the Brazos, and thereby escaped the destruction of San Felipe, in April, 1836, and were preserved until October 10, 1855, when they were burned with the other archives of the Adjutant General's office. These muster rolls of February 29, 1836 became, therefore, the basis on which pay vouchers and land certificates issued to Fannin's men; and official copies of these rolls, prepared several years before the originals were destroyed, are preserved among the archives of the General Land Office of Texas.

These land office copies were prepared and certified under the provisions of an Act of the Legislature of Texas approved February 9, 1850, and entitled

"An act for the relief of the heirs of those who fell with Fannin, Ward, Travis, Grant and Johnson during the War with Mexico in the years 1835 and 1836,"
and were certified by Ben F. Hill, Adjutant General, March 11, 1850, as being
"A list of those who fell with Fannin, Ward, Travis, Grant and Johnson during the War with Mexico in the years 1835 and 1836."
