[A1] Texas State Archives Online Index

[T2] DEFENDERS OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS,
Daughters of the Republic of Texas,
              Austin, Texas, 1989

"This subseries consists of 129 rolls, including muster rolls
and receipt rolls (payrolls) of Companies A through I, 1st
Regiment, Infantry, plus two cavalry companies, plus various
detachments, of the Army of the Republic of Texas (or regular
army). They date mostly from 1839-1841. They are usually
recorded on pre-printed forms. The receipt rolls do not
include officers, and include the signature of each soldier.
Information on each soldier normally includes: name, rank,
enlistment date, enlistment period, by whom enlisted, where
enlisted, to what time last paid, by whom last paid, amount of
bounty paid and amount due, and remarks (transfers,
promotions, resignations, illnesses, wounds, deaths, etc.).
They are arranged by company.

Ledger 401-1064 is a partial index to these rolls, with the
name of each soldier (arranged roughly alphabetically),
captain, date of enlistment, remarks, and file number (purpose
unknown). It is rather difficult, however, to match an entry
with a given muster roll; captains, as well as soldiers,
tended to shift around from one company to another, and it is
unknown whether all of the rolls referenced are still extant.

Enabling legislation for the Army of the Republic includes:
Act to raise a regular army (November 24, 1835, calling for
1,120 men); Act for establishing rules and articles for
government of the armies of the Republic of Texas (November
21, 1836); Joint Resolution authorizing the President to
reorganize the army (November 30, 1836); Act to organize and
fix the military establishment of the Republic of Texas
[besides volunteers and mounted rifle corps and militia]
(December 20, 1836, which authorized four regiments of
infantry, with ten companies per regiment, one regiment of
cavalry, and one regiment of artillery); Joint resolution for
the relief of soldiers composing the late 1st Regiment of
Infantry [which had been disbanded sometime after February 5,
1840] (December 10, 1841)." [A1]
