[T7] AFTER SAN JACINTO: The Texas-Mexican Frontier, 1836-1841,
Joseph Milton Nance, University of Texas Press,
Austin, 1963
[T1] A collection for MUSTER ROLLS OF THE TEXAS REVOLUTION,
Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Austin,
Texas, 1986
The Subseries, Militia Military Rolls 1836-1845, "consists of
approximately 362 muster rolls and receipt rolls, of about 145
captains, the bulk of them dating 1838-1839, arranged
alphabetically by captain. This subseries had previously been
arranged into 'Militia', 'Rangers', and 'Volunteers',
distinctions which were artificial. Lines of organization and
chains of command were extremely fluid during the Republic;
'ranger' captains apparently reported to militia colonels.
Furthermore, terminology was fairly loose: the terms 'rangers',
'mounted volunteers', 'mounted gunmen', 'mounted riflemen', and
'spies', were apparently synonymous. The item inventory to
these rolls has retained the designation(s) used on each
particular roll, including the county whenever cited.
Pre-printed forms were often used. Receipt rolls include
officers, and also original signatures. Information on each
soldier varies, but may include: name, rank, date and place of
enrollment, date of discharge, remarks, and sometimes
information on horses, accoutrements, rations, etc.
Some of the rolls--apparently those whose designations
included the term 'Ranger'--were included in the card index to
individual soldiers in the search room, labelled 'First Texas
Rangers'." [A1]
The Subseries, Minute Men Military Rolls 1841-1842, "consists of
approximately 96 muster rolls and receipt rolls, of 13 captains,
for units specifically called 'Minute Men', 1841-1842. ...
They used the same pre-printed forms as the militia, and
include: name, rank, date and place of enrollment, date of
discharge, remarks, and sometimes information on horses,
accoutrements, rations, etc. Individual soldiers in these
companies are included in the search room card index labelled
'Minute Men', which also includes some post-Republic, pre-Civil
War units. The Republic Minute Men were authorized by the Act
to encourage frontier protection (February 4, 1841)." [A1]
Arranged alphabetically by Captain's name.
