"This subseries consists of 45 muster rolls and payrolls, for 17
captains commanding 11 ships of the Republic of Texas Navy
(Austin, Brutus, Colorado, Invincible, Lafitte, Potomac, San
Antonio, San Bernard, San Jacinto, Wharton, and Zavala); in
addition, there are three lists of officers (1839, 1842-1844)
and a continuous list of officers and men, by ship (1836-1843,
1846). The rolls are arranged alphabetically by ship.
Information for each sailor includes: name, rank, dates of
entry and discharge, date of appointment (for officers), and
remarks; one roll includes physical descriptions. There is a
card index labelled 'Navy' in the search room, one series by
seaman and another by ship.
"There is also a ledger which is a general muster book of the
Texas Ship of War Austin listing 250 persons assigned to that
ship between October 1, 1842 and July 26, 1843, giving the
following information: number, name, rank, date of enlistment,
term, where enlisted, date of entry for pay on board this
vessel, date of appearance for duty, date of entry for rations,
which vessel or station from, date of leaving this vessel
temporarily, for what reason, date of return, days absent
temporarily, date of final discharge from this vessel, why
discharged finally, which port at discharged finally, and
remarks.
"Finally, there is one ledger which contains a roster of Texas
Navy personnel, 1835-1845, arranged roughly alphabetically (by
the first letter of the last name of each individual).
Information in this roster includes: 'marginal number' (1
through 7708), file number (1 through 119), rank, name, vessel,
and date. It appears, from a note of explanation on page one,
that this roster was compiled sometime after August 5, 1858."
