distinguished himself in action at the "Grass Fight," and in the storming of Bexar, and who had served as Adjutant under Johnson and Grant, Fannin transferred Brooks and Chadwick to his staff, and appointed Brister Regimental Adjutant and Gideon Rose, who had been First Sergeant of Winn's Company, Regimental Sergeant Major. Having decided, about the same time, that he was, during General Houston's furlough, Acting Commander-in-Chief of the Texan armies in the field, he reorganized his staff on that basis, with Chadwick as Acting Adjutant General and Holt as Acting Quartermaster General. Brooks, in addition to his duties as aid-de-camp, was also assigned the functions of Engineer and Ordnance Officer.

About March 1st, Dr. Joseph E. Field, whom General Sam Houston had appointed Post Surgeon at Copano, reported to Colonel Fannin for duty; and Dr. Joseph H. Barnard, from Captain Shackelford's Company, was assigned to staff duty as Assistant Surgeon to the Provisional Regiment. When Lewis Ayers, of Refugio, who had been a member of the Provisional Council and Collector of the Port of Lavaca, joined Fannin's command, on March 4th, he was made Acting Assistant Quartermaster General, under Holt, it being intended that he should take charge of the provisions and supplies at Cox's Point and Dimmitt's Landing.
