About this list

EDITOR'S COMPOSITE LIST OF MEN

This composite list of Davenport's men of the Goliad Campaign is intended to show what biographical sketches are missing and any changes of name or fate between Davenport's 1936 manuscript and his 1939 paper. Name spelling is Davenport's choice from all available records.

This list is NOT intended to be a more definitive list of men of the Goliad Campaign. In fact, the paper in Appendix B suggests some new names and name corrections be made to Davenport's list. Incorporation of these new names should be based on additional research of surviving records of the men in Republic archives.

Davenport intentionally omitted some biographical sketches from his 1936 manuscript, some (p. 86) because better sketches were available, and some (e.g., Hannan, p. 413) because of insufficient evidence that the men were members of Fannin's command. This still leaves some sketches missing without explanation, other than Davenport's comment (p. 85) that the work was incomplete.

There are some changes in names and fates in Davenport's 1939 paper, three years later, some also without explanation. The evidence for the changes may be in the twenty-some linear feet of Davenport papers in the Texas State Archives and the University of Texas Library at Austin.

There is no such thing as a "final list" of the Goliad Men as new evidence will continue to appear. The Goliad Massacre victim William S. Brown was identified in 1999 as William Silvan Brown of Montreal, Canada (see biographical sketch added to Davenport 1936.)
