between and the weather was the only hazard.

The short crops were:

1873, too wet
1881, too dry
1905, too wet
1915, insects and reduced acreage
1935, insects, too wet and reduced acreage

The failure of 1935 hurt worse than the others for then there was an immediate recovery. The land was fresh prior to 1900 and insects and Johnson grass and land loan companies had not taken hold.

Prior to 1900 wages were low and while necessities were almost as high as now, there were few luxuries to buy, so all the money went for necessities and everyone had what he felt he should have and was satisfied.

The only way to come out of the depression is through co-operation and leadership by such bodies as The Clarksville Chamber of Commerce, which is doing patriotic service, and I think that patriotism should begin at home and most of it be kept there.
