CHAPTER XI.

COMPANY F, WHITFIELD'S LEGION OF
TEXAS CAVALRY

Major Edward West was appointed the first sheriff of Red River County. After its organization as a county within the Republic, he was unanimously elected Captain of Company F, Whitfield's Legion of Texas Cavalry, which was mustered into service by E. R. Hawkins of Daingerfield, at Clarksville, March 7, 1862. This company was duly organized by electing Edward West as Captain, afterwards discharged by reason of overage, on reorganization of the army in May, 1862. Major West returned home and died May 8, 1868. Here follows the muster roll of this company:

MUSTER ROLL OF COMPANY F

John L. Carroll, First Lieutenant. Later discharged by reason of overage at the reorganization of the army in May, 1862. He returned home and died April 3, 1880.

Robert Smith, Second Lieutenant. He was discharged by reason of overage at the reorganization of the army in May, 1862. He returned home and died December 23, 1889.

Stephen Grant was Junior Second Lieutenant. He was discharged by reason of overage at the reorganization
