REMINISCENCES OF POST-BELLUM AND
ANTE-BELLUM TIMES


[The William English Family]

Among the notable settlers who came to Texas and settled in Red River County before the Civil War, about 1852, was the English family. The facts that follow concerning this fine family and descendants are from a narrative given by Mrs. Lou E. Clark [photo] and her sister, Mrs. Ida Banks, in 1931. Used by permission of S. E. Clark. The interesting narrative which constitutes this entire chapter, follows:

WILLIAMS ENGLISH AND SON THOMAS

From the old family Bible, now in possession of the widow of Rev. John Wicker English, the following entry is taken:

"Thomas English, Sr., son of William and Bettie English, was born October 13, 1754. Jane English, daughter of Robert and Hannah Wicker, was born May 27, 1760. Simeon English (son of Thomas English and Jane Wicker) was born July 22, 1798. Evine[*] McFerron, wife of Simon English, was born July 30, 1814. They were married
