Republic of Texas, or of the State of Arkansas and United States. The treaty with Spain in 1819 provided that a boundary line between the United States and Spanish provinces to the southwest should run from the mouth of the Sabine River along the meander to the point of intersection at the 32nd parallel north to the 100th meridian, north on this line to the Arkansas River, thence to the source of this river, from this point due north to the 42nd parallel, thence along this line to the Pacific Ocean. Nobody knew just where the east boundary line of Texas would run before it was moved. This line could not be definitely defined, except by the joint act of the Republic of Texas. This boundary question was a most interesting subject for diplomatic correspondence and discussion. As matters went, the settlers residing in this disputed territory apparently did not particularly care which jurisdiction should prevail. They enjoyed the least tampering with their liberties by regulations in supreme government.

It was well known to the administration at the close of the year 1837 that this disputed territory was determined to organize authorities under the Republic of Texas.* However, the long drawn controversy was closed by the official survey of the eastern boundary line which ran east and south, always consistent with the 94th meridian, from the Sabine River to the Red River.
